Books Can Take You Anywhere : Ooh Ahh

Books Can Take You Anywhere is a whimsical piece that espouses books and their content, thus fulfilling our court ordered community service. A.C. Duncan lends a steady hand to the guitar solo sections and Deanna Johnson provided us with much of the book knowledge referenced in the lyrics. This is the type of song that is inevitably made when one of the band members is married to an English teacher.

This is last of the "meh" batch of songs we recorded back in August 2007. From here on out, we're going to start releasing the good ones, about which more later.

Wake up, sleepy head: True, we haven't posted much as of late. But we've recorded 3 new songs and still have 2 yet unreleased.

What's coming up, man?: We're fixin' to release "Backseat" or "2 Cool 4 School" in the next month or so, both of which came from the December 2007 sessions. After that, gradually drop "You Get Nothing and Like It," "Get So Lonely," and "Stop the Music." When everything is counted, that adds up to 11 tracks on this album. Considered yourself stoked.

State of the Ooh Ahh Nation

Ever wondered who in the world would look at a blog like this? At least one person on every livable continent, that's who. Don't believe us? The proof is in the picture.

As you can see, Ooh Ahh is spanning the globe. Ok, maybe not... but we are huge in Europe and South America... when compared to Australia. The continent of Africa was givin' us no love, until finally Whitehouse called his African fan base, and voila, we got some hits from the Cradle of Civilization. Then, a few days later... an unrelated hit in Morocco.

Now if we can just keep our stronghold in Africa and North America, play it safe for a few turns to gain a few cards, and use those to acquire more canons and horses, we can win this game of rock band Risk!

Help us by telling your friends about Ooh Ahh. Tell them the music is actually pretty good, tell them the music is worth listening to, or tell them that the songs are bootleg Jonas Brothers tunes. Whatever you want!

Saxobone,is a new jam that features Whitehouse on vocals and sax, with Mike on back up vox. We're really trying to grow up these days--writings songs that you can look straight in the eye and so forth. But old habits are tough to fight, and we can't yet resist the urge to abuse a sax, especially since Whitehouse wails. Oddly enough, Whitehouse and his sax have a history of showing up at the most opportune times. Speaking of which, that reminds me of a picture (the one above), about which to you I will describe...

Back in 2002, I gots my senior pictures taken in downtown Farmington at Focal Point. I was there with my tuba. By some cosmic coincidence, Drew was there with his saxophone. While it is common for seniors to bring in their band instruments to Focal Point on picture day, apparently, few seniors actually think to play them. Furthermore, few seniors think to have some kind of dual band instrument photo shoot.* We did both of these things. The staff at Focal Point seemed delighted when we played a tune from Monty Python, though I suspect they would have been less pleased had they known the corresponding lyrics to the song.

Part Of Your World is a cover of the heartfelt song, belted by Ariel the mermaid in the Disney animated feature film, The Little Mermaid, and it reminds me of an anecdote which you will read now:

I remember being at an esteemed holiday get together with an English teacher. It was an Halloween party complete with unhealthy snacks, a teen wolf costume and karaoke. Now, I know I seem like a shy and reserved kind of guy but once the karaoke starts, I don't stop. After a few practice songs, my eyes locked on to an exciting song choice. The Karaoke CD, it's cover an underwater paradise, was...placed in the machine. I felt my sweaty hands grip the microphone. I opened my mouth, and after that something took over me. Just as the sea-witch, Ursula, had stolen Ariel's voice for her witch-ly endeavors, I had channeled Ariel's voice for my ROCK-ly endeavors.

Expectedly, the song of a mermaid pouring out her heart and beautifully articulating her wishes and dreams through my voice easily captured the hearts of the women in the room, who were all whisked back to the days of their childhood when they wished that they too could be half fish. But then, something unexpected happened. A man in his 30's, there with his wife came down the stairs. He later admitted to his wife that he "needed to get closer" to me. He felt attracted to what he heard, what he saw. He could not help himself. He felt the power.

Christmastimez 4 Loverz : Ooh Ahh

Christmastimez 4 Loverz is a new holiday classic written for the Secular Christmas Holiday. This song is a remake, some might say a better-make, of an older song by Brett that has been restored, reworked and beautified. It reminds me of an anecdote which you will read now:

Monday morning, just before showering, I got a telephone call from Captain Dave Shereda. He promptly asked what I was doing. After I explained that my plans were to take a shower and eat breakfast-lunch, or "brunch" as I have been known to call it, he told me to forget that. Turns out his 11 foot Christmas tree, complete with hundreds of ornaments, had crashed down onto a glass table during the night. The tree was laying in the living room amongst thousands of pieces of crushed ornament shards.

Sometimes the holidays can be that way. One disaster after another crashing down and causing an overflow of extra work (decorating, buying presents, reseated a downed christmas tree, shoveling snow, etc.) and for a few moments, that whole dreydll and menorah thing sounds like a better fit.

This Ooh Ahh Christmas song reminds us why we do it, why we even bother with Christmas at all. All of the cliches are mentioned (mistletoe, chestnuts, stockings) and hopefully, like other yule tide songs, it'll make you feel woefully lonely if you don't have a significant other.

so without further ado, Ooh Ahh to all, and to all a good song.

Generate My MIDI is our first song posting under the resurgent Ooh Ahh brand name, and it reminds me of an anecdote, which you will read now:

I remember being at a modern art museum one evening and watching some new age music-video-computer-digital-art guys do their thing. These guys had hipply put together this big long set of digital music and danced in front of a video screen full of animations. The animations and music depicted an adventure these two dudes were having in some sort of crazy modern art universe. These guys are awesome but they are complete nerds I said to my friend who, like me, was also wearing the recommended 3D glasses. She seemed appalled. Those dudes can't be nerds. They make music and people at art museums pay to see it! They can't be nerds!

Tacos or Modern Art?

They were nerds. Those dudes wielded one of the nerdiest powers of all: the ability to control MIDI.

For those of you who have never felt a deep connection with a Yamaha, MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Complete oversimplification: its the "language" that computers use to transmit rhythmic and tonal data which is then transformed into music. Yes, its completely geeky, but only those who understand MIDI's might can make jamz. Timbaland is a nerd. Kanye is a nerd. Pharrell is a nerd and is actually in a band called N.E.R.D. They are the dweeb-lords that make partying college kids bump'n'grind in packed living rooms. They are your overlords, and you gladly submit to their sexy, slow jam demands.

Meanwhile, we've made a song that addresses the power of beats and MIDI. The lyrics in Generate My MIDI are slightly cryptic and kind of meaningful although the message probably seems much more clever in our heads. Everything does really. Come to think of it, "Help! I'm trapped in a Computer!" is probably much more clever in our heads, but not by much.

How We Started the Fire: A Brief History of Ooh Ahh

With this blog we've begun a noble experiment--the creation of a brand new blog, the continued forging of jams, and the resurrection of a brand name, Ooh Ahh. But first, let's talk history.

Ooh Ahh was founded in 2002 as a rocknroll cover band to play in the Farmington High School Talent Show. We originally couldn't think of a name, but we had to write something down on the performer try-out application. We defaulted to a loud grunting noise that Lou Reed made in his cover of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy." Ooh Ahh was born.

A year later, Ooh Ahh returned to the Talent Show stage. If you recall, 2003 was the year of falling down on stage, yo no diggity marching bands, and "Remix to Andy Brown." We closed the talent show, though in our minds we had just played Woodstock, man. Those were the days.

In the summer of 2004, we reassembled, flipped some members, and expanded our repetoire beyond 2 songs. 5, count'em, 5 songs. This was the year after high school, the year of getting fired from that painting gig that I was bad at, and the year we dated teachers. We were a band of college aged musicians waging electric war against a bunch of high school aged punks. We won the Farmington Area Founder's Fest Battle of the Bands and played the mainstage the next day. There was nothing higher. Rockstars were we. We had the large novelty check to prove it.

In 2005, we reassmbled, retained our line up, and expanded our repetoire yet again. We beat more high school students in the Farmington Area Founders Fest Battle of the Bands, but I don't think they gave us another novelty check. They forgot to arrange for the Battle of the Bands to play on the mainstage, so we didn't, and we went our seperate ways back to school or whatever else we were up to.

In 2006, we got our kicks by playing on the mainstage. No Battle of the Bands. They just let us play because they forgot to do so last year. We played at 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon. Yes, rockstars play at 2:00 PM. It was Sandy's birthday.

In 2007, Ooh Ahh, the live band, formed for a show at historic Cowley's and Son's in downtown Farmington. Thanks to a silly web survey that got John Waisanen's attention, we were able to land a gig on the Thursday night before Founder's Fest. For the first time, we played at a venue that served alcohol and did not allow anyone under the age of 18. It was SO much better than playing the teen center in the ice arena, though we'll be the first to admit that Cowley's was lacking in the zamboni department. For us, this was the be all end all of gigs. We played our 2 sets, took a break, and played more of the same songs we just played for all the drunk folks who had hobbled over from the Beer Tent. There was dancing, drunken merriment, rocknroll, Andy Brown cameos, and most importantly, Mr. Gold.

After that, Ooh Ahh the live band went seperate ways. Some members kept producing original music under the Funnelpants label. This shall forever be known as the Funnelpants era.

But now, Ooh Ahh is back. No longer a live band, Ooh Ahh is our brand name for all the creative stuff we put out. Ooh Ahh features a rotating cast of contributors that we hope will continue to grow. In the future, we'd like to showcase more audio, some video, and whatever else our peoples can put together.
